Bryn Athyn Orchestra Young Artist Competition 2015

Sejung An, cello, is the first prize winner of the 2015 Bryn Athyn Orchestra Young Artist Competition. As winner, Sejung will perform with the Orchestra as a soloist during the orchestra's Spring concert this season. Sejung is a student of Metta Watts and principal cellist of the Youth Chamber Orchestra.

Bryn Athyn Orchestra introduced the Young Artist Competition in 2015. This annual competition offers one winner the opportunity to appear as a soloist with the Bryn Athyn Orchestra as part of one regularly scheduled concert during the following season.

The orchestra currently consists of approximately 50 dedicated musicians from the greater Philadelphia area and is under the baton of Dan Kujala. Mr. Kujala is a teacher, an active soloist, chamber musician and a section leader of the Warminster Symphony Orchestra.


The Bryn Athyn Orchestra Young Artists Competition is open to instrumentalists in grades 9-12 or who will be no more than 18 years of age on the competition date. Students who are attending a college level music conservatory are not eligible to apply. Applicants must reside in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery or Philadelphia Counties in Pennsylvania; or Burlington, Camden, Gloucester or Mercer Counties in New Jersey. First place winners may not enter the competition in subsequent years.


Only complete applications are considered. A complete application consists of the following.

  1. A completed application form. The PDF download is available here.
  2. Proof of age (photocopy of birth certificate or passport).
  3. Proof of residency (photocopy of utility bill, school document).
  4. One letter of recommendation (from teacher, conductor, etc.).
  5. A non-refundable application fee in the form of a check or money order made payable to the Bryn Athyn Orchestra Association in the amount of $35.

One first place winner receives a monetary prize of $500, payable on performance with the orchestra. The winner must be available to rehearse and perform with the Bryn Athyn Orchestra during a regularly scheduled concert in the next concert season at the discretion of the Music Director. If the chosen winner is unavailable to perform, a runner-up may be advanced.


Qualifications and Guidelines

  1. Auditions are offered to woodwind, brass, string, percussion, and piano performers.
  2. Auditions are open to students in grades 9-12 or who are up to and including age 18 at the time of the audition.
  3. The audition piece must be a work for solo and orchestra.
  4. The audition piece should be no longer than 15 minutes in length, and must be a work available in the public domain, or out of copyright restriction.
  5. The audition piece must be the same piece to be performed in concert with the orchestra.
  6. It is not necessary to memorize the solo for the audition.
  7. Applicants should be prepared to play an entire solo or concerto movement.
  8. Students may audition on more than one instrument. A separate audition form and separate fee must be submitted for each instrument.
  9. Applicants must wear appropriate performance apparel for the audition.
  10. Performers must provide 3 copies of audition music, each labeled with the performer's name. Please bring copies of the music to the audition: do not mail them with the application.
  11. Accompanists are not required for the audition. Applicants may bring an accompanist if desired, however the accompanist may not be the applicant's teacher. Only the auditioning student and his/her accompanist will be permitted in the audition room. All teachers and parents must remain in the designated waiting area.

Auditions were held on Saturday April 18, 2015. Audition times were offered between 11am and 3pm. All applicants were notified of their audition time by April 11, 2015.


Judges are professional musicians. Judges comments are sent to every participant following the competition. The decision of the judges is final.
